Controls Engineer

General Summary:  Responsible for the design, development, installation, management, and maintenance of equipment used to control and monitor manufacturing and utility equipment.  The individual must have a solid technical background in addition to strong troubleshooting skills.  This position also provides occasional off-hours support to the various sites within the organization.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Manage and lead electrical and controls equipment installation and retrofit projects
  • Generate CapEx (CER) requests for various capital projects
  • Identify and implement cost savings and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Develop solid working relationships with various departments in the organization
  • Effectively communicates all process and/or equipment changes to affected personnel
  • Assist maintenance teams in troubleshooting electrical and controls problems as they arise, even during off-hours.  Expected to share on-call responsibilities
  • Maintains backups of all servers and equipment related files and programs
  • Formulates and executes complex experimental design
  • Stays current on field related technology, codes, standards, best practices, etc.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • PLC and HMI programming experience required 
  • Rockwell/Allen-Bradley platforms highly preferred
  • Troubleshooting skills and willingness to split time between office and plant floor
  • Experience with VFDs, Servos, MCC’s, and other motor control platforms
  • Experience with Ethernet networking and communication protocols such as EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, Profibus, Modbus, ControlNet, and RemoteI/O
  • Experience with process instrumentation a plus
  • Mechanical background/understanding is a plus
  • Hands-on experience in manufacturing environment preferred
  • Food, dairy, or CPG experience preferred
  • Up to 20% travel, depending on project location

 

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology
  • 3 - 5 years + experience in Controls and Automation
