Lead US Network Engineer


An opportunity has arisen for a Lead US Network Engineer with Glanbia Business Services(GBS) Inc.  This is a full-time position and will be based in our offices in Aurora, Illinois and will report to the Network & Technical Security Architect.



The base location of the role will be Aurora, Illinois, a blended working arrangement available through our Smart  working model which allows you a greater choice in how you work and live giving you a better work-life balance.



The Lead US Network Engineer will form a vital part of the GBS Network & Technical Security Team and will report to the Network & Technical Security Architect. The network & technical security team support a global network spanning 150 global locations and with varying site profiles, from corporate HQs, to major food production plants to warehouses, depots and retail branches.  There are datacentres in Dublin, Ireland and in Illinois that are at the core of the current network topology, providing a highly resilient network environment.


The organisation has embarked on a major digital transformation with a Cloud-first strategy that requires a major evolution within the Network & Network Security technologies. This role will be involved in that evolution program on a day-to-day basis.


The network must support transmission of data from business critical applications such as M365, Teams, video-conferencing, collaboration tools, Manufacturing Execution Systems, Controls & Automation systems, LIMS, SAP. Separate teams within Glanbia support those applications and services and the Network & Technical Security Team collaborate closely with those teams to ensure the network delivers an efficient and highly resilient backbone and foundation for those services.


The Network & Technical Security team works directly with managed-services partners for delivery of managed network and network security services.  


Role Summary & Responsibilities

  • Support & troubleshoot Cisco network environment (900+ routers & switches) located across Ireland, Europe, US & ASPAC
  • Support & troubleshoot Checkpoint & Cisco ASA estate (60+ firewalls)
  • Support & troubleshoot Checkpoint Remote Access Solution for global estate of 5000 seats
  • Support & troubleshoot Forcepoint Webproxy Solution for global estate of 5000 seats
  • Lead or participate in key deployment projects such as SD-WAN & LAN transformation, verify hardware BOM proposals, process Change Requests
  • Work both independently and as part of a team in delivering on time and on budget network projects
  • Ensure network documentation sets are kept up to date by managed services provider
  • Provide level 3 network support to Global Servicedesk on customer network issues relating to LAN, WLAN, WAN, VPN, Firewall filtering & web security/proxy service
  • Manage and liaise with multiple vendors and service providers, including offshore teams
  • Vendor management within a managed-service environment is a key part of the role, working closely with managed network and security partners, ensuring they are delivering service to the agreed SLAs, verifying reports from service partners, assessing Root Cause Analysis documents
  • Ensuring reporting of key SLAs and KPIs & driving the service providers to deliver to those metrics
  • Deliver network & security solutions to the internal business units in response to their high-level business requirements, processing Change Requests within the agreed Change Management



  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science or related discipline; or equivalent combination of education and experience


Skills & Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in enterprise routing, switching and network security
  • Vendor management: Experience in a managed-service environment (as customer or as provider)
  • Strong experience troubleshooting enterprise network & security issues
  • Strong working knowledge of firewall design and network security protocols
  • Good knowledge of Cisco routing, switching & WiFi protocols
  • Ability to document and illustrate network proposals and solutions in articulate manner
  • Ability to communicate ideas and solutions very well with all stakeholders & customers
  • Strong team-player & works on own initiative
