R&D Technical Manager

Role Summary

Reporting to the  Program Manager, this position requires an experienced Industrial Scientist / Chemist / Biochemist / Fermentation scientist with an in depth knowledge of  the  purification, separation and fractionation of organic acids, proteins, biomass, minerals at pilot and commercial scale, chemical and biological analysis and microbial fermentation optimisation. Good people and project management, and decision making skills, excellent scientific knowledge and experience in scale up from pilot to commercial scale is a requirement.

This role will provide in-depth technical knowledge, direction and management skills in the optimisation and scale up of a bio fermentation process. Working as a team lead and as part of a wider team and reporting to key internal and external stakeholders the role will have responsibility to manage resources and deliver key project milestones within budget in the commercialisation of an industrial process. The role will direct and work with key internal and external scientific and process experts and work with engineers, finance, project and program managers, communicate regular reports to the business in the delivery of the project.


Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver scale up of pilot process & fermentation to industrial scale.
  • Development/optimisation of a cost effective bio refining process
  • Provide in-depth technical direction and management of internal and external scientific and technical experts
  • Technical project management, project risk assessments in delivery of industrial process.
  • Exhibit aptitude for planning and delivering projects to completion and within budget.
  • Management of expectations of internal and external stakeholders,
  • Compilation of project updates and presentation of progress to the business on a regular basis.
  • Scientific team lead but work within cross-functional teams across the project team to  deliver project.
  • Keep technically abreast of relevant developments in the field to identify new opportunities. 
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders, suppliers  on development and implementation of analytical quality methodologies, specifications, final and in process testing and COAs
  • Work with Technical, Operations, commercial and QA teams to ensure seamless transfer of products to scale up and commercialisation.



  • Total of  10  years relevant industrial and or academic experience in some or all of the following, fractionation or separation technologies, fermentation optimisation, chemical and biochemical  analytical technologies, industrial scale up, project management and scientific team lead of above activities, stakeholder & resource management. 
  • Experience of
  • product and process commercialisation from  lab to pilot plant to commercial scale and management of associated internal and external activities
  • Scientific team lead and people management & working as part of wider team
  • Project and stakeholder management
  • Delivery of projects with challenging budgets and timelines
  • Management of third party collaborations
  • Supplier contract negotiations
  • Patent FTO and IP reviews
  • Experience in some of the following technologies & processes
  • Lab, pilot and commercial scale separation technologies, centrifugation, filtration (UF, NF, MF & DF), evaporation & distillation, liquid-liquid extraction.
  • Microbial fermentation, bio refining and optimisation
  • Ion exchange chromatography
  • Analytical techniques including, ICP-OES, HPLC with a number of detectors, wet chemistry techniques, nutrient analysis
  • Demineralisation
  • Thermal processing
  • Drying
  • Liquid-liquid extraction



  • Science based qualification – 3rd level
  • Biotechnology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Purification, Bio processing,  fermentation
  • BSc, MSc or PhD preferably in upstream, fermentation or down stream processing
  • Qualification in chemical and biochemical analysis
