Director of Electrical & Controls Engineering

Job Summary

Responsible for the management of all electrical engineering and automation controls functions at all Glanbia Nutritionals (GN) manufacturing facilities.  Develops and implements the electrical standards and automation plans at all GN manufacturing facilities.  Works with engineering personnel, stakeholders, vendors and executive leaders, in identifying, developing and implementing the most cost-effective means of automating manufacturing processes within the GN facilities.  Directs automation controls, MES implementation, instrumentation strategies, and electrical engineering design decisions for GN.   Further, manages all electrical engineering and controls staff and contractors to deliver excellence in electrical and controls engineering.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities (not restrictive)

  • Develop and implement electrical standards at all GN facilities to meet internal needs along with any local and national building requirements.
  • Directly supervises electrical and controls engineers addressing electrical and controls issues across all GN sites.
  • Oversee electrical installations associated with all capital projects at all GN facilities. 
  • Annually develop and implement a 3 year automation strategic plan at GN facilities; ensure the strategy is consistent across all platforms.
  • Annually develop a 5-year capital budget to achieve objectives of the GN automation plan
  • Develop an operational budget to ensure excellence in delivery of electrical and controls engineering services to GN facilities.
  • Keep apprised of new developments in plant automation techniques and products and recommend adoption of the newest products where appropriate.
  • Assist the Director of EH&S in the development and implementation of the GN electrical safety plan.
  • Determine appropriate instrumentation needs and requirements; develop appropriate PMs and in conjunction with stakeholders identify appropriate personnel or contractors needed to ensure routine completion of PMs.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Process Engineering, identify opportunities to improve plant function through more comprehensive automation.
  • Manage contractors tasked with upgrading all automation controls functions.
  • Develop, prepare and report as directed on weekly KPI reports for use by senior management.
  • Assist in any additional tasks as directed by the Sr. Director of Engineering or VPs of Operations.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Manage a staff of 6-8 controls engineers throughout all GN facilities
  • Manage a third-party integrator providing automation services throughout all GN facilities
  • Manage a variety of electrical subcontractors providing providing service throughout all GN facilities

 

Qualification & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, or equivalent work experience.  Minimum of 8 years of professional experience in engineering.
  • Experience in the management of technical staff in a fast-paced manufacturing environment required.
  • Work experience in electrical engineering/controls engineering at a plant level required.
  • Experience in lean manufacturing principles and practices is a plus
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, plans and specifications, and P&IDs.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and decision-making ability without oversight / approval.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill.
  • Comply with and be willing to enforce all safety policies, practices and procedures. Report all unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Human Resources.
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.

 

Travel Requirements

Significant overnight travel (up to 40%) by land and/or air.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly involves sitting, talking or listening and the use of hands and fingers.
  • Occasionally standing and walking.
  • Frequently involves reaching with hands and arms and stooping or kneeling.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items, and works with the fingers.
  • Involves sedentary physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities of a primarily administrative nature.
  • Should be able to ability to identify and distinguish colors and focus on objects and see at 20 inches or less.
  • May be exposed to moderate noise levels in a plant environment
