Job Summary

The Continuous Improvement Engineer position will assist in plant operations contributing towards improving manufacturing efficiencies by utilizing continuous improvement techniques. This position will take a focused look at issues that have been identified in the plant and will drive them to completion through root cause identification and implement permanent fixes. This position will look at and identify new processes and/or projects to improve the current operations that will lead to better efficiencies in the plant. Be a “leader of change”. Must be comfortable working with all levels within the organization, able to question the status quo and be a strong communicator.


Essential Functions

  • Will be responsible for managing and leading continuous improvement projects identified by engineering or plant operations.
  • Organize, implement and maintain production process flow.
  • Develop working instructions, workmanship standards and process documents and ensure they are followed.
  • Improve continually existing operation, for increased quality, productivity, efficiency and cost savings.
  • Investigate operational problems affecting production, report on problems and recommend solutions.
  • Identify ways to reduce production costs through recommendations – i.e. new process equipment, equipment justification to improve performance.
  • Research and development projects that will improve efficiency or reliability to include: design for cost, test, manufacturability and efficiency.
  • Work with other relevant departments to determine estimated costs, run time, cost reduction, root cause, and close the feedback loop.
  • Put together maintenance and capital expenditure projects for approval including prepare and negotiate contracts/work orders with suppliers and contractors and provide in-house project management.
  • Manage tasks within approved budgets.
  • Helps coordinate improvement projects including any trial activity between all functional areas.
  • Identify and prioritize improvement opportunities, help identify root cause and ensure that permanent fixes are in place.
  • Troubleshoot process problems and identify solutions that reduce downtime and conserve costs.
  • Designs and conducts plant trials to determine the test methods, procedures, parts, and equipment needed to implement engineering changes.
  • Lead person of the development and improvement of both the PM and EM pillar activities as directed by the engineering manager
  • Utilizes GPS processes, driving zero losses and upholds the culture of Southwest Cheese non-negotiable.
  • Each employee shall comply with occupational safety and health standards and all rules, regulations, and orders issued pursuant to the Occupational Safety and Health  Act which are applicable to his/her own actions and conduct.
  • Complies with all applicable food safety regulations and mandates (Safe Quality Foods, Food and Drug Admin, Pasteurized Milk Ordinance)

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from four-year college or university; or a minimum of five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience preferably in food manufacturing.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, handle multiply projects simultaneously and delegate assignments to others.
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures. Report all unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Human Resources.
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Proficient computer skills including MS Office and Project Management.


Typical Environmental Conditions

  • May be exposed to loud noise levels (i.e. manufacturing equipment).
  • May be exposed to humidity, intense heat, and areas with possible air contamination, fumes and toxic chemicals.
  • May work in areas with mechanical moving parts, above ground with risk of fall, or areas with risk of electrical shock.
  • Travel Requirements
  • Minimal travel limited within the local area.
