Job Summary

Leading machine shop operations and projects identified by the Continuous Improvement Projects Manager. Utilizing tools of six sigma, lean manufacturing, and strong project management skills.  Provides support to the plant managers on operational issues that impact overall business performance.

                                                                                                                                                                     

Essential Functions

  • Leads day-to-day operations in the machine shop to include machinist/welders, electricians and paint and tile personnel.
  • Ensure work orders are closed out when complete and file work orders as needed.
  • Supervises required daily contractor work including all required documentation, permits, contractor orientations as required by manager
  • Working knowledge of welding, tile, paint and electrical trades.
  • Works with Manager to fix, design and machine complex manufacturing parts.
  • Performs machining/welding/electrical work as necessary.
  • Regularly designs in C.A.D.
  • Operates cutting operations on the water jet.
  • Regularly perform sanitary welding on process pipe.
  • Reads, interprets, and follows pass downs, work orders, blueprints, and work instructions.
  • Ensures safety within day-to-day operations.
  • Participates in training, safety and quality programs.
  • Required to work in SAP to organize, identify and close out work notifications and work orders
  • Quote and order material as required to ensure smooth operation of the machine shop
  • Responsible for equipment and upkeep of the bone yard. Regular audits of the yard and the materials within
  • Utilizes GPS processes, driving zero losses and upholds the culture of Southwest Cheese non-negotiables.
  • Each employee shall comply with occupational safety and health standards and all rules, regulations, and orders issued pursuant to the Occupational Safety and Health  Act which are applicable to his/her own actions and conduct.
  • Complies with all applicable food safety regulations and mandates (Safe Quality Foods, Food and Drug Admin, Pasteurized Milk Ordinance)

Additional Functions

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Ensure after hours response in the event of plant outage and emergencies.

 

Qualifications

  • Requires an Associate’s Degree in maintenance or related field; or a minimum of two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to perform sanitary welding
  • Working knowledge of Math - Geometry and Trigonometry
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Understanding of TPM and similar continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Ability to define problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draw valid conclusions and deal with a variety of concrete variables.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, handle multiply projects simultaneously and delegate assignments to others.
  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures. Report all unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Human Resources
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
  • Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly involves talking or listening, standing and walking, and the use of hands and fingers.
  • Frequently involves sitting, and reaching with hands and arms
  • Occasionally involves crouching, stooping, kneeling and/or climbing or balancing.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items, works with the fingers, and perceives attributes of objects and materials.
  • Involves moderate physical activity performing somewhat strenuous daily activities of a primarily product/technical nature.
  • Should be able to identify and distinguish colors, see clearly at 20 inches or closer and 20 feet or more, observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point, judge distances and spatial relationships, and adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.

 

Typical Environmental Conditions

  • May be exposed to loud noise levels (i.e. manufacturing equipment).
  • May be exposed to humidity, intense heat, and fumes and toxic chemicals.
  • May work in areas with mechanical moving parts, above ground with risk of fall, or areas with risk of electrical shock.

 

Travel Requirements

    • Minimal overnight travel (up to 10%) by land and/or air.
