Southwest Cheese is the world’s largest manufacture of cheese/whey products and is located in Clovis, New Mexico.  It is a joint venture between Glanbia and The Greater Southwest Agency and provides ample opportunity for career growth and experience in a fast-paced, high-performing enterprise.

 

Job Summary

 

 

Essential Functions

  • Knowledge of HVAC, refrigeration, boilers, air compressor
  • Ability to assess plant energy requirements and conduct energy audits for energy reduction
  • Familiarity with Management of Change
  • Assists in hazard analysis within plant location and assists plant management teams in the development and execution of action plans for the improvement of safety and environmental performance.
  • Designs acceptable engineering changes in coordination with engineering department in respect to risk assessment evaluations.
  • Assists in leading all aspects of safety including training development, risk assessment, reporting, auditing, etc.
  • Monitors site safety and environmental resources to assure success. 
  • Delivers training programs and promotes safety culture to insure workplace free of injuries.  This includes but is not limited to refining specific training i.e. emergency response, qualified electrical, PSM, respiratory protection, etc.   In conjunction with EHS Director, develops and coordinates plan to update and maintain all plant training including work instructions and condition sheets. 
  • Keeps supervisory/management personnel apprised to eliminate hazardous condition and unsafe practices.
  • Works closely with department manager to implement company initiative and to lead change.
  • Utilizes GPS processes, driving zero losses and upholds the culture of Southwest Cheese non-negotiables.
  • Each employee shall comply with occupational safety and health standards and all rules, regulations, and orders issued pursuant to the Occupational Safety and Health  Act which are applicable to his/her own actions and conduct.
  • Complies with all applicable food safety regulations and mandates (Safe Quality Foods, Food and Drug Admin, Pasteurized Milk Ordinance)

Qualifications

  • BS Degree in Industrial Safety, Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineer or other technical degree.  5-10 years of plant experience in related industry / manufacturing environment and PSM/RMP.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and decision-making ability without oversight / approval.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures. Report all unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Human Resources
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly involves sitting, talking or listening and the use of hands and fingers.
  • Occasionally standing and walking.
  • Frequently involves reaching with hands and arms and stooping or kneeling.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items, and works with the fingers.
  • Involves sedentary physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities of a primarily administrative nature.
  • Should be able to ability to identify and distinguish colors and focus on objects and see at 20 inches or less.

 

 

Typical Environmental Conditions

  • May be exposed to moderate noise levels (i.e. office equipment or light traffic).

 

Travel Requirements

    • Minimal overnight travel (up to 10%) by land and/or air.
