Job Summary:

The Category Specialist will be responsible for driving strategic sourcing and spend analysis initiatives for assigned categories and projects within the Procurement Department at the local or regional level.  This role will work closely with business unit stakeholders, multi-functional teams, and finance to analyze, develop, and drive category specific sourcing initiatives to meet and exceed business metrics in terms of cost, quality, service, and delivery


Essential Functions:

Category Management:

  • Develop collaborative relationships with business stakeholders to define clear business needs that drive both immediate and sustained benefits related to spend analysis initiatives, cost savings, operational efficiencies, and supplier performance improvements
  • Develop a comprehensive annual sourcing plan for assigned category(ies) including strategy, cost savings, and risk mitigation
  • Lead development and execution of all sourcing-related functions ensuring effective transition during implementation to include:
    • Perform due-diligence and assessment of prospective suppliers
    • Execute RFx events using company eSourcing tool
    • Manage sourcing projects, key initiatives, and supplier negotiations
    • Verify spend analysis, market insights, Service Level Agreements, and total cost of ownership
    • Ensure contract compliance standards, policies, and procedures are followed and maintained
    • Manage supplier payment terms/invoice resolution in adherence with policy
    • Conduct supplier business reviews at applicable intervals using performance data analytics

Commercial Negotiation:

  • Establish and maintain relationship with Legal to ensure all contractual terms and conditions are formally reviewed, approved, and remain compliant
  • Establish a negotiation plan per project with clarity of required and desired outcomes
  • Lead negotiation of agreements and/or statements of work between GPN and suppliers


  • Demonstrate ability to analyze large data sets from SAP, Business Objects, and Ariba to extract pertinent information in support of decision making
  • Analyze pricing proposals, financial reports, and other data to validate supplier pricing and capabilities
  • Analyze spend data to reveal new potential opportunities and leverage best practices from global counterparts

Market/Business Intelligence:

  • Participate in a culture of continuous improvement and innovation by leveraging business and industry intelligence providing efficiencies
  • Operational knowledge of current industry/supplier trends, risks, and benefits in both domestic and global markets as applicable

Customer Service:

  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with internal and external key stakeholders
  • Demonstrate a collaborative approach in delivering business outcomes
  • Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction are achieved


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the position
    • Negotiation Principles
    • Understanding of legal agreement language/clauses
  • Skills of the position
    • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of the Microsoft Suite (including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
    • Strong working knowledge of SAP, Business Objects, and Ariba preferred
  • Abilities for the position
    • Ability to negotiate contracts with suppliers
    • Ability to communicate with all levels of management
    • Ability to clearly communicate with all types of employees


Decision Making/ Problem Solving:

  • Develop a comprehensive strategic sourcing plan using data analytics and market intelligence
  • Perform due diligence to determine and select categories and potential suppliers requiring strategic sourcing
  • Negotiate agreements and/or statements of work between GPN and suppliers                 



  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) in supply chain, finance, business management, or related field required.
  • C.P.M. or equivalent certification preferred.
  • 2-5 years’ experience in strategic sourcing, contract negotiations, or commensurate experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills, specifically in communications across a multi-national organization
