Glanbia Performance Nutrition (GPN) is a global leader in the development, manufacturing & marketing of sports and nutrition solutions.  The company is headquartered in Downers Grove, IL and markets products under its own brands and for many of the leading brands of sports and wellness products through the world. This exciting business continues to grow rapidly and is currently seeking a Consumer and Sensory Science Technologist I to join the sensory group in R&D. This position will be accountable for managing and setting up sensory panels, recruiting panelists, working with outside labs when applicable, reviewing the data and writing reports or providing compiled data for report creation by the Sensory Lead/Manager. GPN is a wholly owned subsidiary of Glanbia, a multi-national nutritionals,

dairy and food products business headquartered in Ireland.


Essential Functions:

  • Works with Product Development and consults on their requirements for sensory.
  • Assists as needed on Second Sourcing and Productivity team to set up testing to assure there is no change in finished good quality as new raw materials are being reviewed and approved
  • Creates questionnaires and organizes the various sensory tests as defined by the sensory manager.
  • Manages all samples for testing, sample preparation protocol and recruits for panels.
  • Manages the data collected from the testing and runs statistical analysis as defined by sensory manager.
  • Manage, organize and track multiple sensory projects.
  • Support final report creation by providing lead with overall results and comments from testing.
  • Works with Sensory Manager to set up discrimination screening and sensory training for trained panelists.
  • Maintains lists of trained panelists, tracks panelists performance and timing when refresher training is required.
  • Responsible for maintaining the sensory kitchen and assuring all required testing items are stocked and available.
  • Ensure projects are completed on time.

Assures safety protocols are in place and enforced.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   

  • Education/Experience: B.S. in Sensory, Food Science or related field.
  • B.S. entry level to 3 years’ experience in sensory science,
  • Proficiency in food science; experience with food products with interest in growth in the food sensory sciences.
  • Knowledge of basic statistical analysis with desire and ability to continue to develop this knowledge.
  • Knowledge of sensory testing and application of descriptive, discrimination, consumer research a plus.


Skills of the position

  • Basic understanding of Design of Experiments (DOE) and ability to help define variables for testing.
  • Must have good critical thinking skills and be detail-oriented
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent communication and written English skills.
  • Previous working experience or knowledge of Compusense a plus.

  • M.S. with thesis or Ph.D. required.

  • Good understanding of basic statistics.
  • Active member of at least one key professional organization including  ASTM, IFT, Pangborn, Sensometrics, Society of Sensory Professionals, etc.
