Data Engineer


A vacancy has arisen for the role of Data Engineer at Glanbia Business Services, based out of our offices in Kilkenny or Dublin. This position will report to the Data Analytics Lead.




The base location of the role will be Citywest, Dublin 24 OR Kilkenny with a blended working arrangement available through our Smart working model which allows you a greater choice in how you work and live, giving you a better work-life balance.



The Data Engineer will be responsible for the scheduling, maintenance and implementation of data extracts, transformations and data loads using Databricks in a Microsoft Azure environment. The ideal candidate will be a self-directed data expert who enjoys optimizing data systems and has demonstrable experience working with a Microsoft Azure data engineering stack.


The Data Engineer will support Glanbia’s data analytics team, ensuring that the delivery architecture is consistent through our ongoing data initiatives. While the role requires a detailed understanding of data in all areas, previous experience with financial, commercial and consumption data would be advantageous.


Key deliverables of the role


  • Maintenance of systems, processes, code and pipelines for the ETL of data from a range of sources (internal and external) and types (APIs, database connectors, flat files etc.) both into and out of Glanbia’s data lake environment.
  • Assembly and maintenance of large and complex data sets that meet both functional and technical business requirements.
  • Working with 3rd party API’s to integrate external data with Glanbia’s data.
  • Creation and/or maintenance of analytics tools that utilize our Azure data lake to provide actionable insight into key business performance indicators and business solutions.
  • Working with data and analytics experts and key stakeholders across Glanbia to strive for greater functionality in our data systems.



  • Primary degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or another numerate discipline.


Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum of four years’ previous experience working as a Data Engineer.
  • Logical thinker with a pro-active attitude, problem solving skills and demonstrable experience working with structured and unstructured datasets.
  • Good knowledge of database structures, theories, principles, and practices generally.
  • Demonstrable experience manipulating, processing and extracting value from large datasets.
  • Ability to write jobs with hands on experience in Spark and good knowledge of SQL generally.
  • Familiarity with data loading tools and workflow/schedulers in an Azure environment.
  • Good knowledge of object oriented languages and their associated development methodologies (e.g. Java, Python, Scala etc.)
  • Demonstrable ability to write high-performance, reliable and maintainable code.
  • Knowledge and experience with a version control system (e.g. Git).
  • Good organizational skills with experience supporting cross-functional teams.
  • Some previous experience with or exposure to Databricks would be advantageous.
  • Familiarity with connecting to front-end data visualisation tools (e.g. Tableau) and general familiarity with data science tools (e.g. RStudio Server) would be an advantage.
