The European region revenue for 2020 was circa 20% of total GPN revenue, with the UK being the biggest market for our products outside of the US, and we have a clear growth ambition to achieve $500m revenue by 2023. This growth will come from a mix of organic sales growth and expansion of market presence within specific geographies and acquisition. With this growth rate comes significant and rapid change, both organizationally and strategically. 

We are now looking for an experienced Technical Manager to join the team at our Middlesbrough site.  The role is to provide leadership to the Technical Department, Product Supply team, our Co-manufacturers and the wider European business in the disciplines of Product Safety, Quality and Legality, whilst ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, customer / audit standards and encouraging best practice.

The role requires the maintenance & improvement of the site QMS in your areas of responsibility and across the wider business. Your application must encourage best practice at all levels within the organisation to promote a right first time approach and establish a food safety culture and effectively manage information flow on Technical & Quality matters within and outside of the business to keep all parties appropriately informed, whilst maintaining control of the process and outcomes.

Responsibilities:

Health, Safety & Welfare: The health, safety and welfare of our colleagues is paramount and you must promote and support a safe working environment and foster a culture of “safety first” at all times.

  • Lead the Technical team and ensure they contribute to a safe working environment such that  equipment, plant and people meet with legislative and internal health and safety standards at all times and support the risk assessment, safe system of work and Accident / Near Miss reporting processes.

Food Safety & Legality: Maintaining the integrity of our products and therefore the business itself is an absolute.  You must ensure this is always the case, as we never knowingly compromise product safety.

  • To lead the site HACCP team, with responsibility for developing, implementing and maintaining the site HACCP study.
  • To ensure all new and current site accreditations are maintained. To lead and co-ordinate all regulatory or customer audits and manage non-conformances and corrective actions. Maintenance of other product safety and Quality Assurance accreditations as deemed necessary by the business or its customers.
  • To ensure specifications are compiled and maintained for all Raw materials and Packaging components, including for Co-manufactured branded items.
  • Manage the approval system for new suppliers of packaging, materials and finished goods and supplier approval audits as necessary.
  • To ensure Specifications are compiled and maintained for all brand and customer products manufactured in Middlesbrough or from Co-Mans.
  • To manage Environmental Health, Trading Standards or other equivalent EU enforcement   bodies complaints and Investigations.
  • To carry out internal quality management system and hygiene audits distributing findings and corrective actions as necessary.
  • To liaise with R&D to ensure internally & externally produced new products comply with appropriate standards, technical / quality specifications and requirements of the customer/s.
  • To escalate, where appropriate, quality or product safety issues which are not being addressed on the site or in the Co-Man base and improved appropriately or in good time or are considered critical to the business or its customers.
  • To ensure that product safety and hygiene requirements meet both specification and HACCP requirements at all times.
  • Ensure the required high standard of housekeeping / GMP on the site is maintained and improvement actions identified.
  • Where an incident does occur, ensure immediate and unambiguous action is taken following GPN & Global Incident Management, Business Continuity & withdrawal / Recall procedures.

Product Quality

  • Ensure all products meet the requirements of the internal and customer specifications and are produced in line with the requirements of the Quality Management System for site and Co-Man produced product.
  • Ensure any necessary amendments or deviations to the requirements are risk assessed, recorded & authorised appropriately before communication to the relevant personnel in the site.
  • Identify, create and deliver Operational strategies to include the maintenance and improvement of Technical and Food Safety measures and ensure that targets are achieved or exceeded.
  • Ensure we deliver appropriate response to customer complaint investigations and audits ensuring any trends or concerns are acted upon to prevent any further re-occurrence. Ensure all outcomes are communicated to relevant parties in a timely manner.
  • Highlight any Material Quality issues to the site and Procurement teams to ensure appropriate action is taken to assess the potential impact of any deviation on finished product quality before it is used and where appropriate provide a documented deviation to concession use.
  • Actively encourage the Technical team to champion quality by leading initiatives that can be acted upon by them, the wider site team and Co-Mans to deliver higher levels of quality & consistency.

  • Appraise and develop your team to ensure they have a clear understanding of the expectations of their role in the business.
  • Identify skill gaps in existing staff to ensure training offered leads to optimum flexibility and adequate holiday / absence cover within and across your team.
  • Development of appropriate training programs on product safety and quality to meet with legislative, customer and business requirements to drive a habit strength positive Food safety & quality culture.
  • Build your Global network across the GPN business unit and the wider Glanbia team to ensure that we leverage expertise and resource across the organisation to deliver world class performance and best in class status in our product safety and quality systems. 

Communication: Good quality communications at the right time will ensure the highest standards of teamwork from all your colleagues at all levels within the business and make certain we are all pulling together in the right direction.

  • Ensure all members of your team are completely conversant with the KPI and business targets and how their role can influence achievement.  Make all measures clear and unambiguous for all, with regular good quality feedback encouraged at all levels.
  • Attend the Weekly Operations Meeting covering your team’s performance against the business & KPI targets and the actions taken by your team to correct failings and improve attainment.  Also discuss updates on any projects allocated to you or your team, colleague development & training updates and opportunities to consider or support concerns.
  • Maintain excellent communication with all functions, with particular attention to Operations,   Engineering, Procurement, R&D, Customer Services and Supply Chain to harness the wider team in delivering your targets.
  • Provide the detail necessary for full and complete reporting of the performance of your team and Co-Man on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis via the appropriate KPI tools.

Planning & Control: You must maintain a structured approach to the delivery of the site strategy plan and the business targets.

  • Develop and present strategic Technical plans aligned to site, EMEA, Global & Corporate          initiatives with a rolling three year horizon that encompasses projects (inc. Capital spend), structure development, system improvement and vehicles for change.
  • Develop and implement a Quality Firewall through a detailed and comprehensive QMS.
  • Where business and/or site decisions might compromise the plans ensure this is raised through the Plant Manager to the broader business as required.
  • Ensure the site has in a place a comprehensive QMS which details how we manage product safety & quality effectively and ensure these standards align with Glanbia, GPN and legal       requirements, but with home authority legislative requirements given priority.
  • Lead the planning and delivery of the Quality Firewall Capital projects program each year and act as Project Manager for these elements of the overall Capital Investment program.

Role Requirements:

  • Previous food / pharma industry experience essential in an equivalent position for 5 years or more
  • A Degree or HND standard of education
  • Level 4 Food Safety
  • Level 4 HACCP
  • Lead Auditor trained
  • PTLLS or equivalent education / training certification and TACCP would be beneficial
  • Working knowledge of BRCGS, RSPO, UTZ / RA, EC No, 853/2004 & EC No 852/2004 is essential
  • Understanding of LGC and WADA, Halal would be beneficial
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook), SAP and QADEX would be an advantage

Role Location / Travel

This role is primarily based in the office, warehouse and on the shop floor which is a typical modern food manufacturing environment, although you will be required to work in other areas of the business and travel Supplier and Co-Man premises on a more regular basis to audit as and when required.
