Role Summary
Reporting to the R&D Head of Plant Based, this position requires an experienced Food Scientist/Technologist with a knowledge of beverage technology, food ingredients, wet and dry processing at pilot and commercial scale, chemical and biological analysis and the application of enzymes in complex food systems. Good people and project management, and decision-making skills, excellent scientific knowledge and experience in scale up from pilot to commercial scale is a requirement.
This role will provide in-depth technical knowledge, direction and management skills in the optimisation and scale up of plant-based projects. Working as part of a wider team and reporting to key internal and external stakeholders, the role will have responsibility to manage resources and deliver key project milestones within budget in the commercialisation of an industrial process. The role will direct and work with key internal and external scientific and process experts and work with engineers, finance, project and program managers, communicate regular reports to the business in the delivery of the project.
Key Responsibilities
• Deliver scale up of pilot processes across plant-based ingredient and consumer-based projects to industrial scale;
• Provide in-depth technical direction and management of internal and external scientific and technical experts;
• Technical project management, project risk assessments in delivery of industrial process;
• Exhibit aptitude for planning and delivering projects to completion and within budget;
• Management of expectations of internal and external stakeholders;
• Compilation of project updates and presentation of progress to the business on a regular basis;
• Scientific team lead but work within cross-functional teams across the project team to deliver project;
• Keep technically abreast of relevant developments in the field to identify new opportunities;
• Work with internal and external stakeholders, suppliers on development and implementation of analytical quality methodologies, specifications, final and in process testing and COAs;
• Work with Technical, Operations, commercial and QA teams to ensure seamless transfer of products to scale up and commercialisation.
Key Requirements
• Science based qualification – 3rd level in Biotechnology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Purification, or Bio processing;
• BSc, MSc or PhD preferably in Food Chemistry or Food Processing;
• Minimum 6 years relevant industrial and/or academic experience in some or all of the following; beverage technology, plant or dairy proteins, chemical and biochemical analytical technologies, industrial scale up, project management and scientific team lead of above activities, stakeholder & resource management;
• Product and process commercialisation from lab to pilot plant to commercial scale and management of associated internal and external activities;
• Participate in internal trainings to demonstrate unique selling points of product offerings;
• Project and stakeholder management;
• Delivery of projects with challenging budgets and timelines;
• Management of third-party collaborations;
• Supplier contract negotiations;
• Patent FTO and IP reviews;
• Experience in some of the following technologies & processes; Lab, pilot and commercial scale separation technologies, centrifugation, filtration (UF, NF, MF & DF), evaporation, liquid-liquid extraction;
• Dry and wet processing of cereals, pulses.
