Job Summary

The Senior Quality Assurance Manager serves as the senior most Quality personnel.


The Senior Quality Assurance Manager plans, develops and implements plant Food Safety Programs including Quality Assurance and Quality Control aspects, conducts quality assurance investigations; collaborates with Production and R&D on technical and quality issues, maintains and controls all quality assurance programs, and supervises all aspects of quality assurance and technical issues.


The Senior Quality Assurance Manager oversees the planning, execution and development of the plant Quality Control analytical laboratory, ensures laboratory employee safety, creates laboratory budget and monitors expenditures, conducts quality control investigations, collaborates with Production and R&D on technical and quality issues, and maintains Quality Control documentation and supervises all aspects of quality control.


The Quality Assurances Manager serves as the primary contact for Glanbia Nutritionals Food Safety Inspections by regulatory authorities and quality related audits by customers and certifying bodies.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Manages all aspects of Quality Assurance and Quality Control at the site.
  • Ensures compliance with regulations, third party certification schemes, customer requirements, corporate quality standards, and site level procedures.
  • Ensures adherence to the overall Quality budget through monitoring, efficiency improvements, and cost containment efforts.
  • Leads the Quality Pillar and driver of continuous improvements for Zero quality defects utilizing Glanbia Performance System tools and principles.
  • Leads and coordinates activities for key Quality projects. 
  • Acts as a site liaison with the corporate Quality group and represents GN Quality with regional key customers

Quality Assurance Related

  • Responsible for the site Food Safety program including the creation and the execution of the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point Program, Food Safety Plan, and prerequisite programs.
  • Oversees internal, customer, third party and regulatory audits, assessments, and inspections and ensures food safety certifications and licenses are maintained.
  • Create and distributes reports on site quality metrics on a weekly and monthly basis and escalates critical issues to corporate Quality team in accordance with policy.
  • Coordinates activities and cooperates with other department managers, Supply Chain Quality, Corporate quality and customers as needed to achieve quality objectives.
  • Champions root cause analysis and administers site corrective and preventive action program (CAPA) ensuring CAPAs are generated in response to defined triggers including internal and external audit observations, negative trends, and complaints.
  • Coordinates with R&D, Technical Service and Production to plan, approve and implements validation protocols to qualify production equipment and methods.
  • Manages and organizes the quality related training program for all employees to ensure sufficient training is in place.
  • Administers quality documentation system including but not limited to specifications, procedures, policies and protocols, and ensures change control is managed in compliance with corporate policy.
  • Reviews and authorizes new raw material and product specifications as well as changes to existing specifications.
  • Ensures customer complaints are captured in the appropriate electronic system, reviewed, corrected, and responded to in a timely manner to minimize quality related losses and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Performs risk assessment as needed in the evaluation of new raw materials, process and products and evaluates technical problems or variances that occur in manufacturing to determine mitigation steps.
  • Leads site level implementation, training, and maintenance of quality software systems and tools including SharePoint sites, CRM, and Intelex in coordination with corporate Quality group.

Quality Control Related

  • Oversees the planning, execution and development of the Quality Control Laboratory to ensure the service levels and analysis are in line with customer and regulatory requirements as well as future business development needs.
  • Develops and ensures adherence to Quality Control Laboratory health and safety protocols including procedures, training, risk assessment, and observation of tasks.
  • Ensures methods of analysis are validated and appropriate for raw materials, intermediates, premix and finished goods analyzed in the Quality Control Laboratory.
  • Supervises the inspection and release of raw materials, intermediates, and finished products.
  • Conducts out of specification investigations to determine the disposition of raw material or finished product and recommend appropriate corrective action.
  • Maintains retain samples and tracking system.
  • Oversee the testing of all incoming materials for conformance to established monographs.
  • Ensures analytical instrumentation includes HPLC, FT-IR, UV/VIS, MP, moisture analyzer and others are maintained, qualified, and/or calibrated in accordance manufacturer’s recommendations and good laboratory practice.
  • Leads site level implementation, training, and maintenance of laboratory information management system (LIMS) in cooperation with the corporate Quality group.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Interviews, selects, and trains employees.
  • Sets rates of pay and hours of work.
  • Maintains quality records.
  • Appraises productivity; handles employee grievances or complaints, or disciplines employees; determines work techniques.
  • Plans and apportions work among employees; determining types of equipment to be used in performing work, or materials needed.
  • Monitors work for legal or regulatory compliance.
  • Provides for safety and security of the workplace.


Performance indicators


  • On time delivery of results for blends tested according to established procedures.
  • Responsible for maintaining SQF, NOP (organic), and NSF DS GMP Certification in the facility.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with food safety standards and regulations, as well as customer and other applicable quality and regulatory requirements.
  • Responsible for timely response to key customer inquiries related to the facility production as assigned.


Qualification & Experience Requirements

Education, Training:

  •  BS Food Science, chemistry or related degree, Masters is Preferred.
  •  Preventive Controls Qualified Individual
  •  Certified HACCP Manager
  •  Qualified Auditor to Global Food Safety Initiative Compliant Scheme (BRC, IFS, SQF) (preferred)


Experience Required:

  • A minimum of 5-8 years related QA/QC and management experience.
  • Analytical laboratory experience.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Experience with writing and maintaining HACCPs, FSP, SOPs, and GMPs
  • Working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Must have demonstrably strong interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Independent, proactive, extremely detail oriented, dependable, organized and ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours to include overtime and weekends when needed.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision while remaining productive at all times.
  • Ability to work with amino acids, vitamins and fine chemicals in powder and liquid form as well as allergen products.
  • Strong desire and ability to work in fast paced deadline orientated environment.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment by identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Proven ability choosing appropriate course of action while considering related costs and benefits.
  • Must be able to communicate to and work well with multiple departments.


Language, Computer &   Numeracy:

  • Fluent in written and spoken German and English required.
  • Computer skills and proficiency with MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Experience with SAP,CRM, SharePoint, Intelex, and LIMS is preferred.
