Sr Microbiologist Manager

Reports to:   Sr Director of Quality Assurance 

 

Job Summary

The role will be responsible for the supervision of the microbial testing analysts and systems relating to the Idaho central laboratory.  The expectation is that this position is capable of developing, growing, and maintaining best practices in alignment with ISO standards and recognized methodologies for microbial testing for our finished products, ingredients, and environmental monitoring practices.

 

Essential Functions

  • Assist with organizing, coordinating, and monitoring ISO certification along with leading teams associated with these programs
  • Outline procedures to maintain a sanitary and safe environment for microbial testing in the laboratory
  • Improve, validate, and maintain sufficient testing procedures to adequately detect possible pathogens and indicator organisms within a matrix of different foods, ingredients, and environments
  • Monitor and confirm that all testing procedures are compliant with the recognized official methodology
  • Ensure safe handling and sanitary disposal of biohazard materials, microbiological cultures, and hazardous waste
  • Maintain records of easily retrievable laboratory procedures and data in accordance with ISO, customer, and regulatory requirements
  • Work with customers to establish product specifications that comply with safety and quality standards
  • Assist with ensuring customer specifications are being met, occasionally assisting with complaint investigations
  • Coordinate necessary training for analysts and support QA Managers as necessary in providing educational material
  • Act as a resource for laboratory personnel and QA Managers 
  • Assist and lead audits of the laboratory
  • Collaborate with the Lab Manager to develop budgets; training plans; and other opportunities for the continuous and focused improvement of the laboratory

Qualifications

  • Requires a Master’s degree in Microbiology, Chemistry, Biology, or a Life Science-related field
  • Has had three or more years of experience managing microbial testing in a FDA regulated laboratory with pathogen testing
  • Familiarity with ISO, SQF, FSMA, and FDA regulations
  • Strong understanding of microbial testing procedures of pathogens that may cause foodborne illness
  • Experience in the dairy industry is preferred   
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to define problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly involves talking or listening, sitting, and the use of hands and fingers.
  • Frequently involves reaching with hands and arms, standing and walking.
  • Occasionally involves crouching, stooping, and/or kneeling.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items, and work with the fingers.
  • Involves light physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities of an administrative nature.
  • Should be able to identify and distinguish colors, see clearly at 20 inches or closer and 20 feet or more, judge distances and spatial relationships, and adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.

 

Typical Environmental Conditions

  • May be exposed to moderate noise levels (i.e. office equipment and light traffic).
  • May be exposed to fumes and toxic chemicals.
  • May work in areas with mechanical moving parts.

 

Travel Requirements

    • Minimal overnight travel (up to 10%) by land and/or air.
