Job Summary

 

  • Responsible for all controls and automation related activity in Connecticut facilities.
  • Provide guidance and technical leadership to the engineering and maintenance teams as well as provide 24/7 support of the electrical and controls systems at multiple facilities.  Must have experience with technologies ranging from the 1980’s thru the most modern up to date instrumentation, PLC’s, and HMI/SCADA systems.

 

 

 

Essential Functions

 

  • Develop plans for automation projects including system architecture, risk assessment, etc.
  • Establish good engineering/manufacturing disciplines and promote new ways of thinking that will produce best in class automation practices
  • Perform PLC installation/modification design and programming
  • Supervise and/or perform HMI installation and programming
  • Lead and/or perform investigation into controls related issues and recommend solutions
  • Lead and/or perform controls repairs and upgrade on production equipment
  • Monitor and evaluate technology trends. Conduct research on leading edge technologies and determine proper fit/application for business needs.
  • Interfaces with all levels of management and employees to gather information and provide guidance for implementation.
  • Designs and conducts plant trials to determine the test methods, procedures, parts, and equipment needed to implement engineering changes.
  • Evaluate and recommend engineering changes to existing equipment that will ensure maximum productivity
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for existing and future automation systems
  • Communicate and work closely with plant operations and maintenance departments.  Develop effective working relationships with same
  • Support plant operations team with technical issues
  • Develop accurate and efficient Process and Instrument Drawings for projects through the use of customer specifications, general process descriptions, company standards and verbal instructions.
  • Communicate and work closely with the I.T. department.  Cooperatively maintain existing, and develop new, technologies for effective and stable process controls and information systems (HMI’s, reports, etc)
  • Coordinates activities and reviews between General Contractor, Engineering firm(s), and the project team.
  • Assist in the development of startup and commissioning documents and training of plant staff.
  • Research and analyze data, such as engineering documents, design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine acceptability for project team goals.
  • Directs and coordinates installation activities to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design and specifications.
  • Drives the right technology for both immediate and long term growth

 

 

 

Additional Functions

 

 

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Sr. Engineering Maintenance Manager
  • Provide training and direction for mechanics duties related to electrical/control systems

 

 

Qualifications

 

 

  • Requires a minimum of 4 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience, Bachelors preferred.
  • Proficient with Automation Direct and Allen-Bradley PLC ControlLogix Platform and development Tools
  • In-depth knowledge of SCADA/HMI design, configuration, programing, testing, and troubleshooting
  • Experienced with closed loop controls and tuning
  • Familiarity of NEC and NFPA 70
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and drawings such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Demonstrated ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures. Report all unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Human Resources
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
  • Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases.
  • Ability to utilize AutoCAD software to create and review technical drawings
  • Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.

  • Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items, works with the fingers, and perceive attributes of objects and materials
  • Involves moderate physical activity performing somewhat strenuous daily activities of a primarily product/technical nature
  • Should be able to identify and distinguish colors, have clear vision at 20 feet or more and clear vision at 20 inches or less, have peripheral vision and depth perception and be able to adjust focus.

 

 

Typical Environmental Conditions

 

 

  • May be exposed to loud noise levels(i.e. manufacturing equipment)
  • May work in areas with mechanical moving parts, strong vibrations, limited lighting, air contamination, and/or exposure to hazardous chemicals and other air contaminants.
  • May work in areas of high heat, humidity and areas with risk of electrical shock and/or fall

 

 

 

Travel Requirements

 

 

  • Minimal overnight travel up to 10%  by land and/or air
  • Day travel between sites up to 50% (5 miles or less)
