The Opportunity
The fluid bed scientist supports Research & Development to develop products and processes for internal and external customers. Create production batch records to assist in the scale-up of these products into production. Provide technical support to production operations where assistance is needed. This permanent position will report to the R&D Manager.
- Understand proper lab documentation in order to create historical records that can be referred to for correct information. Document processing changes from one batch to the next.
- Understanding formulation folders, and what should be contained in them.
- Have a basic understanding of bulk densities and calculating batch sizes.
- Calculate ingredient weights from a formula.
- Selecting the proper scale to weigh amounts.
- Weighing ingredients accurately.
- Making common solutions with mixing, including heated solutions. Filtering solutions when necessary.
- Proper assembly on fluid bed including but not limited to:
- Outlet filter selection and proper installation.
- Proper nozzle and wand assembly, including insulating the wand.
- Setting up spraying off of a scale, or hot plate and a scale.
- Proper operating parameter range selection for the different size fluid beds.
- Proper operation and cleaning of the GPCG-1 and Pilot fluid bed, Pilot Spray Dryer, lab spray dryer, lab blenders, lab mill, tablet presses and other equipment as necessary.
- Calculation and adjusting of spray rates.
- Making judgements of parameter changes (including changing the filter) to produce the best product, based on visual cues, and in-process tests performed in order to make those judgements.
- Understand physical testing procedures including but not limited to free flow and tapped bulk density, particle size distribution (stacked sieve, airjet, Malvern), Loss On Drying.
- Understanding sizing options at the completion of a batch and performing the sizing.
- Proper packaging and labeling of samples for shipment.
- Working with R&D department, Quality and Production to scale the product up into production.
- Suggest operating parameter changes during production to optimize the production process.
- Educate the production team on insights regarding key operating and testing parameters of the new product.
- Recommends fluid bed and spray dryer productivity, efficiency, quality and safety improvements.
- Performs technical investigations in support of non-conformance reports.
- Acts as a resource in CAPA investigations as requested by the CAPA committee.
- Learns the operating basics and formulation functions in PDM, SAP, C4C and knows how to retrieve formulation and project information.
- Create a fluid bed or spray drying batch record (for lab and pilot equipment) from a template.
- Understand how to create a specification data sheet.
- Understanding what information is needed for the proper pricing of a product, including equipment selection, batch sizes and expected process times.
- Completes additional tasks and projects as assigned by management.
The Skills you will bring to the team
- Minimum of B.S., preferably in food science, food & nutrition, biology, chemistry, chemical engineering
- Preferred experience of 1 - 3 years of technological, production or R&D experience in pharmaceutical solid dosage forms or food processing utilizing fluid bed technology.
- Working knowledge and experience with fluid bed technology. Should possess basics of fluid bed process troubleshooting knowledge.
- Must be able to successfully troubleshoot problems found during fluid bed production runs.
- Must have excellent decision making and reasoning skills.
- Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Must be organized, thorough, and self-motivated.
- Must have familiarity with cGMP’s, SOP’s, HAACP’s, or other similar quality programs.
- Computer literate in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SAP
- Strong mechanical aptitude and willing to be hands on.
- Strong ability to prioritize tasks, and handle multiple tasks.
- Must be able to learn and retain training.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English
- Strong SAP knowledge
- Proficient with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and SharePoint.
