Job Summary

Manage all aspects of quality control in a nutritional premix facility. Review, author and develop quality processes as they relate to the analytical laboratory and quality control. Manages all activities of the Quality Control laboratory in the analyses of raw materials and finished products.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities(not restrictive)

  • Manages laboratory and quality control staff.
  • Supervises the inspection and release of raw materials and finished products.
  • Oversees the testing of all incoming materials and finished blends for conformance to established specifications.  Instrumentation includes HPLC, FT-IR, UV/VIS, MP, moisture analyzer and others as needed.
  • Manages out of specification investigation process including corrective actions.
  • Manages deficient materials review process and ensures materials are investigated and dispositioned in a timely manner.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment, inventory and procedures to ensure accurate, timely and cost effective analysis of materials and products.
  • Coordinates with Manufacturing to resolve quality issues and drive quality improvement throughout the facility.
  • Ensures compliance to all quality requirements to meet audit standards and regulatory compliance.
  • Conducts quality investigations to determine the disposition of suspect raw material or finished product including communicating with various departments, customers and vendors.
  • Coordinates the accuracy and timeliness of the testing of retain samples and its tracking system. 
  • Trains and mentors key direct reports to effectively manage the functional areas of responsibility and safety.
  • Monitors and report on key quality measures throughout the facility.
  • Maintain quality control documentation.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities(if applicable)

  • Interview, select, and training employees.
  • Setting rates of pay and hours of work.
  • Maintain quality records.
  • Appraising productivity; handling employee grievances or complaints, or disciplining employees;
  • Determining work techniques.
  • Planning and apportioning work among employees;
  • Determining types of equipment to be used in performing work, or materials needed.
  • Monitoring work for legal or regulatory compliance.
  • Provide for safety and security of the workplace.
  • Direct Reports: Quality Control and Laboratory staff including Laboratory Analysts I and II, QC Lab Technicians, QC Lab Assistants and Positive Release Technicians

 

Performance indicators(related to above Task & Responsibilities respectively)

  • On time delivery of results for blends tested according to established procedures.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with SQF, NSF, FDA, customer and other applicable quality and regulatory requirements for Quality Control and the analytical laboratory.
  • Responsible for ensuring laboratory safety measures are in place and being follows.
  • Responsible for monitoring laboratory related cost including overtime to ensure within established budgetary guidelines.
  • Responsible for timely response to key customer inquiries related to Springfield production as assigned.

 

Qualification&Experience Requirements

Education, Training:

  • BS Food Science, chemistry or related degree, Masters is Preferred.

Experience Required:

  •  A minimum of 3-5 years related QC and management experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Experience with writing and maintaining SOPs
  • Experience with analytical laboratory testing.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Must have demonstrably strong interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Independent, proactive, extremely detail oriented, dependable, organized and ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours to include overtime and weekends when needed.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision while remaining productive at all times.
  • Ability to work with amino acids, vitamins and fine chemicals in powder and liquid form as well as allergen products.
  • Strong desire and ability to work in fast paced deadline orientated environment.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment by identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Proven ability choosing appropriate course of action while considering related costs and benefits.
  • Must be able to communicate to and work well with multiple departments.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours to include overtime and weekends when needed.

 

Language, Computer &   Numeracy:

  • Fluent in written and spoken English required
  • Computer skills and proficiency with MS Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Experience with SAP and Chromeleon or Empower software is preferred

Travel requirements:

  • Potential for periodic domestic travel (~10%)
