Job Summary

Determines needed repairs for all equipment, building and utilities.  Plans and directs the related maintenance activities in conjunction with Production. 


Essential Functions

  • Manage day to day operations of the maintenance department including determining needed repairs and improvements, establishing project priorities and assigning work tasks, scheduling work to most effectively meet production needs.
  • Supervises and directs the maintenance staff including Maintenance Leads and Maintenance Scheduler by providing training and development, monitoring and evaluating work performance.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for existing and future automation systems
  • Communicate and work closely with the I.T. department.  Cooperatively maintain existing, and develop new, technologies for effective and stable process controls and information systems (HMI’s, reports, etc.)
  • Reviews utilities’ usage and costs for: electric and gas, water and sewer billing and metering; and monitors energy conservation programs.
  • Assist in the development of startup and commissioning documents and training of plant staff.
  • Documents departmental activity through SAP (maintenance parts, preventative maintenance and work order scheduling) preparation of various reports, work orders, maintenance schedules and other incidental record keeping.
  • Develop scope and criteria for the design of systems, such as instruments, machines, pneumatic, mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, or heat transfer systems.
  • Directs and coordinates installation activities to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design and specifications.
  • Develops maintenance budget for reoccurring and non-reoccurring expenses.  Reoccurring are the scheduled maintenance activities that are required to maintain the total facility in an operation condition.
  • Manage the Site Sustaining Capital Expense Plan:
    • Review and manage approved projects - verify progress/installation, report status to management.
    • Track the Site Sustaining Capex plan budget.
  • Utilizes GPS processes, driving zero losses and upholds the culture of Southwest Cheese non-negotiables.
  • Each employee shall comply with occupational safety and health standards and all rules, regulations, and orders issued pursuant to the Occupational Safety and Health  Act which are applicable to his/her own actions and conduct.
  • Complies with all applicable food safety regulations and mandates (Safe Quality Foods, Food and Drug Admin, Pasteurized Milk Ordinance)

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and a minimum of seven years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrated management and leadership abilities
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and drawings such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Demonstrated ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures. Report all unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Human Resources
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of problems.
  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly involves, talking or listening, reaching with hands and arms, and the use of hands and fingers.
  • Frequently involves sitting, standing and walking.
  • Occasionally involves crouching, stooping, kneeling and/or climbing or balancing.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items, works with the fingers, and perceive attributes of objects and materials.
  • Involves moderate physical activity performing somewhat strenuous daily activities of a primarily product/technical nature.
  • Should be able to ability to identify and distinguish colors, have clear vision at 20 feet or more and clear vision at 20 inches or less, have, peripheral vision and depth perception and have the ability to adjust focus.


Typical Environmental Conditions

  • May be exposed to loud noise levels (i.e. manufacturing equipment).
  • May work in areas with mechanical moving parts, strong vibrations, improper illumination, air contamination, and/or exposure to toxic fumes and chemicals.
  • May work in areas of high heat, humidity and places with a risk of electrical shock and/or fall.


Travel Requirements

    • Overnight travel (up to 10%) by land and/or air.
