Job Summary:


This entry level lab-based position will be expected to work both independently and in conjunction with other Food Technologists on the validation of alternate raw materials to drive productivity and ensure continuity of supply. Materials will be evaluated in foods and supplements including powders, ready to eat and ready to drink formats. 


Note: This is a lab position where all food allergens (milk, soy, nuts, peanuts, wheat, egg, etc…) are present.  This person will be involved in tasting a variety product types and subsequently exposed to them. 


Responsibilities include:


  • Prepare benchtop samples of foods and supplements including: powders, ready-to-drink beverages, ready-to-eat foods, capsule, and/or tablets.
  • Test physical characteristics and stability of raw materials and finished goods.
  • Review documentation and initiate appropriate analytical testing to determine if material is fit for purpose. 
  • Create sensory test in Compusense and execute panels to validate new materials or formulations
  • Partner with Procurement to validate alternate sources for ingredients identified for quality improvement, continuity of supply or cost.
  • Work closely with Quality Assurance/Control through raw material approval.
  • Consult with Food Process Engineer and Material Scientist as needed to ensure smooth transition to full-scale production.
  • Oversee pilot plant experiments and scale-up manufacturing runs.
  • Initiate raw material, scale-up, and factory trial analytical testing.
  • Document all formulations, variables tested, product stability, and other pertinent details and record in lab notebooks and Formula Management System.
  • Enter raw material specifications and formulas into product development software.
  • Work with key suppliers to keep abreast of upcoming trends, novel ingredients, and new application ideas.
  • Adhere to GPN R&D standards to maintain a safe working environment
  • Share responsibilites with R&D team members with lab support activities.
  • Contribute to innovation, trouble shooting, and brain storming ideas in a team environment.  


Decision Making / Problem Solving


  • Identify key attributes for functionality for ingredients in sport nutrition, lifestyle and weight management products.
  • Approve or fail alternate materials based on test results and business need.
  • Prioritize projects to meet deadlines.


Education Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Food Science, Dairy Science, Biochemistry, Nutrition, or other related science field
  • 0-4 years of relevant experience working in the food, beverage, or dietary supplement industry; prior knowledge of dietary supplements beneficial.
