Manager,Product Development

Job Summary:

This leadership position will be expected to work both independently and in conjunction with their Director, the R&D Leadership Team, and other members of the R&D department on managing development of powders, and ready-to-eat formats from concept through execution. This position is 50% project based and 50% people management. Advanced knowledge around formulating and developing products in more than one of the aforementioned formats (Powders, Bars, other RTE foods, etc.) is a must.  Successful applicants must have an extensive track record of developing and executing new concepts through to market/launch, and the candidate must demonstrate knowledge and a proven formulation history in powdered beverages. The Product Development Manager (PDM) will proactively provide technical leadership to cross functional GPN team members (and their employees) and will be collaborating in teams across the majority of departments within GPN. The ability to juggle multiple projects and apply critical thinking, organizational awareness, communication and analytical skills is essential. This position will work in conjunction with the R&D leadership team and other members of the R&D department on managing the development of powder, and ready-to-eat formats from concept through execution.

 

  • Note: This is a lab position where all food allergens (milk, soy, nuts, peanuts, wheat, egg, etc…) are present.  This person will be involved in tasting a variety product types and subsequently exposed to them.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Team Management
    • Work with Director/ R&D leadership team to set achievable and measurable goals for direct reports that are tied to core company initiatives
    • Work with direct reports to develop IDPs and PDPs
      • Develop S.M.A.R.T. goals for team
      • Identify Growth Opportunities for team members
    • Guide and mentor junior team members as needed (technical skills, organizational skils, EQ, etc…).
    • Oversee multiple direct reports; many of the reports may have their own direct reports.
    • Oversee formulation and ensure accuracy of PDM’s team’s projects and other scientists projects where the PDM is the work stream lead
    • Ensure that safety procedures, protocols and initiatives are implemented and followed by self- and team.
    • Understands each employee’s workload, their projects and subsequent scopes, and helps assign new projects to appropriate resources based on this information, bandwidth, and business priorities.
    • Works to implement cross team training
  • New Product Development
    • Formulate and Develop foods and supplements including: powders, tablets & capsules, ready-to-drink, and ready-to-eat items. Includes: formulation, validating ingredient and ingredient vendors, preliminary costing and preparing nutritional and supplement facts panels.
    • Follows all GPN SOPs, safety guidelines, and the “GPN Way” of product execution (for self and team).
    • Create and flavor prototypes.
    • Organizes sensory panels. Refines formulations until desired characteristics are achieved.
    • Oversees/Conducts pilot plant experiments and scale-up manufacturing runs.
    • Initiates raw material and factory trial analytical testing.
    • Enters raw material specifications and formulas into product development software.
    • Reformulates to bring formulations into compliance with changing government regulations or customer requirements.
    • Monitors product stability.
    • Guide and mentor junior team members.
  • Documentation
    • Responsible for the robustness, accuracy, and oversight of all formulations, variables tested, product stability, costing, and other pertinent details for their team and ensuring they enter the information into lab notebooks and Formula Management System.
    • Reviews, validates, and signs off on formulation work done by the team through random auditing and sensitive material validation
    • Oversees and Produces formula cost information; works with purchasing, finance, and sales teams to help establish final product pricing; initiates new item documents and set-up for all product introductions.
    • Reviews, guides, and approves Sensory Reports, Trial Reports, First Production Reports, Technical Briefs, and other documentation.
    • On an ongoing basis document successes and areas for growth of direct reports for use in PDP, milestone, and advancement discussions
    • Helps maintain project prioritization
  • Collaboration

    • Enables and Encourages a One R&D mindset within the team and assigns work across Innovation, Renovation, Efficiency, Productivity and other work streams as needed by the broader R&D team.
    • “Walking the Talk” – Ensure an aligned R&D leadership messaging, behavior, and actions/follow through on leadership decisions cascaded through the organization. 
    • Steer cross functional discussions in relation to R&D’s role in projects.
    • Works with Procurement, Regulatory, and Quality to develop and review thorough. specifications, Supplement/Nutrition facts panels, ingredient listings, etc…
      • Validate work done by the team on the above to ensure accuracy and robustness.
    • Provides Leadership in a team environment and motivates others.
    • Contributes to innovation, trouble shooting, and brain storming ideas in a team environment.
    • Identifies & overcomes barriers to successful innovation by developing strong interdepartmental relationships with customer, manufacturing, supply chain, accounting, quality, and purchasing teams.
    • Understands customer needs, business needs and strategy.
    • Works with key suppliers and purchasing team to keep abreast of upcoming trends, novel ingredients, and new application ideas.
    • Considered a key knowledgeable resource for others in the company.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   Basic information of the position

  • Knowledge of the position
    • Advanced knowledge in more than one of the aforementioned formats (Powders, Bars or other RTE) is a must. 
    • Knowledge and development history of powdered beverages is essential
    • Knowledge and application of flavor systems is essential
    • Understands daily lab processes and production processes
    • Extensive raw material and stability knowledge is essential
    • Proven track record of developing new concepts and bringing products to market
  • Skills of the position
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) as well as nutritional software
    • SAP experience preferred
    • Detail oriented, well organized, and follows GMP lab and factory guidelines
    • Strong analytical and communication skills
    • Ability to solve problems quickly and “think outside the box” handling multiple projects/tasks at one time
    • Works well in a fast paced “hands on” environment and stays in control under pressure
    • Able to formulate independently based on customer requirements for a project identifying any potential issues and alerting manager or customer

Education/Experience:

  • Degree or equivalent experience: Masters of Science degree in Food Science, Nutrition or related field or equivalent experience
  • Years of experience: Minimum of 8-10 years of relevant experience working in the food, beverage, or dietary supplement industry; prior development and knowledge of dietary supplements is an advantage
