Job Summary

Provide technical services to all cheese production plants including new process and product development.  Continued development of R&D projects to deliver new cheese products and concepts at a commercial level and expand our core business and present innovative ideas to our customers. Works with the Operational Development Manager on the integration of NPD


Essential Functions


  • Directly supervise activities of Cheese Innovation Scientists.
  • Provide technical support and problem solving on cheese production and product performance issues.
  • Coordinate the implementation of new process and new product development.
  • Develop and commercialize new products and processes including: bench top development, pilot plant trials, and production plant trials to achieve business objectives.
  • Design and execute projects for scaling up bench top and pilot plant processes to full production level.
  • Work with key vendors and evaluate ingredients and recipes to create & conduct experiments leading to innovative new cheese products, flavors, or applications; and provide input, observations, and recommendations of solutions.
  • Work with cheese operations, sales and marketing to resolve customer issues and improve profitability.
  • Prepare periodic special reports concerning the results of laboratory tests or product development trials including next steps and impact on key business initiatives.
  • Provide technical support to the Quality Assurance department to help minimize the cost of quality.
  • Liaise with the Cheese Innovation Center, R&D, QA, Production, Operational Development Manager, Supply Chain, and Sales & Marketing on a regular basis.


Additional Functions

  • Perform other duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Dairy science or a related field and 2- 3 years of experience.
  • Experience with pilot plant, and scaling into plant trials, and commercialization of new products / processes.
  • Must be familiar with cheese and processing equipment i.e. vats, belts, towers, packaging etc.


  • Statistical experimental design.
  • Demonstrated analytical experience, specifically for various chemical, sensory and physical properties like protein, calcium, fat, moisture, flavor, texture, shredabilty and meltability.
  • Demonstrated expert test development knowledge.
  • Developed presentation and scientific writing skills.
  • Ability to interact with Universities to keep abreast of advancing technologies related to cheese production.

  • Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items, works with the fingers, and perceive attributes of objects and materials.
  • Involves moderate physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities of a primarily administrative nature.
  • Should be able to identify and distinguish colors, see clearly at 20 inches or closer and 20 feet or more, observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point, judge distances and spatial relationships, and adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.


Typical Environmental Conditions

  • May be exposed to moderate noise levels (i.e. office equipment, light traffic).
  • May be exposed to humidity, intense heat and cold, outdoor weather conditions, and fumes and toxic chemicals.


Travel Requirements

  • Minimal overnight travel (up to 20%) by land and/or air.
