MWC is a state of the art cheese and whey production facility in St. Johns, MI. MWC is a joint venture between Glanbia Nutritionals, Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) and Select Milk Producers Inc. (Select).


Job Summary

Plans, coordinates, and directs testing program designed to ensure the company is in compliance to our lab standards.  In the absence of the Quality Director, Quality Manager the responsibility for Food Safety shall be assigned to the Laboratory Team Leader. 


Essential Functions

  • Assist with organizing, coordinating, and monitoring the Quality Systems – FSPCA, HACCP, GMP, and SQF Ed 8.1, level 3 certification.
  • Actively participate in Focus Improvement (FI) Teams.
  • Assist with overseeing the Food Safety Programs and leadership in the QM pillar.
  • Evaluating and Monitor ingredients, packaging and process suppliers to ensure they meet MWC QA standards.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of government and industry quality codes and standards.
  • Participate in all State, FDA, USDA, customer and 3rd party audits.
  • Responsible for internal auditing along with QA Manager the SQF Food Safety and Quality Plans.
  • Grade and evaluate product and determine product release and distribution based on customer requirements.
  • Work with plant management to track plant performance to key performance indicators (KPI's).
  • Assist with ensuring customer specifications are being met, if not help with investigating complaints and responses.
  • Assist with ensuring that all employees have adequate knowledge of our GMP and Food Safety programs and provide training.
  • Assist in the training of Quality ATLs.
  • Assist with GMP and housekeeping audits of the facility.
  • Assist with documentation and corrective actions involving Quality Systems.
  • QA Manager covers in QA Team Leader's absence.  
  • Utilize GPS processes, driving zero losses and upholds the culture of MWC non-negotiable.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Ensure after hours response in the event of plant outage and emergencies.
  • Each employee shall comply with occupational safety and health standards and all rules, regulations, and orders issued pursuant to the Occupational Safety and Health  Act which are applicable to his/her own actions and conduct.
  • Complies with all applicable food safety regulations and mandates (Safe Quality Foods, Food and Drug Admin, Pasteurized Milk Ordinance)

Additional Functions

  • Perform other duties as assigned.



  • Associates degree preferred/or a minimum of three years practical bench experience in produce development or ingredient application either in an industrial, university or research setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrable experience with laboratory techniques for the measurement of chemical components, microbiological parameters, and sensory attributes. 
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Practical experience in QA techniques, principles, and adherence to government regulations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, handle multiply projects simultaneously and delegate assignments to others.
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures. Report all unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Human Resources
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
  • Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill.

  • Regularly involves talking or listening, standing and walking, and the use of hands and fingers.

  • Occasionally involves crouching, stooping, kneeling and/or climbing or balancing.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items, works with the fingers, and perceives attributes of objects and materials.
  • Involves moderate physical activity performing somewhat strenuous daily activities of a primarily product/technical nature.
  • Should be able to identify and distinguish colors, see clearly at 20 inches or closer and 20 feet or more, observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point, judge distances and spatial relationships, and adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.


Typical Environmental Conditions

  • May be exposed to loud noise levels (i.e. manufacturing equipment).
  • May be exposed to humidity, intense heat, and areas with possible air contamination, fumes and toxic chemicals.
  • May work in areas with mechanical moving parts, above ground with risk of fall, or areas with risk of electrical shock.

  • Minimal travel limited within the local area.
