Job Summary

The Category Manager will proactively provide insights and will support and deliver the many aspects of national energy and sustainability strategy and sourcing processes, ensuring Glanbia maintain best value in that strategy. This position will collaborate cross-functionally to deliver the GN portion of the global energy agenda.  The role will be responsible for supporting the sourcing strategic energy and sustainability mechanisms and associated analysis and services that provide the lowest total cost of ownership. This position reports to the Director of Category Management Indirect and support the following business functions: ESG




Essential Functions and Responsibilities

This is a new position and function within Glanbia. The likelihood is high the the responsibilities and description of this job will migrate over time and new key function will be assigned that are not captured here.


  • Develop, Implement,  and Optimize a robust global strategy for assigned categories
    • Develop the strategy in conjunction with the Director of Category Management Indirect,the Global ESG Team and the GPN team to support the delivery and communication of the energy and sustainability strategy as it pertains to Group ESG/Carbon ambition.
    • Support the tracking systems required to report out on strategy targets and goals.
    • Support the global cross-functional business teams to effectively incorporate Group strategy and goals into the GN energy and sustainability strategy in conjunction with GPN and execute necessary projects.
    • Ensure that the business requirements and needs of each region are well understood and how moves or adjustments in local strategies integrate into the overall strategy.  Work with the Procurement Operations Team and the Plant Management Teams globally to ensure good communication and adherence to plan.
  • Deliver the category strategy including sourcing activities, which generate benefits and achieve financial savings targets through insight and analysis of category and sub-categories areas, including:
    • Analysis of procurement spend and supply base to establish suppliers per category and sub category
    • Analysis of supply markets to identify potential suppliers and market trends
    • Identification of internal and external cost drivers in the category
    • Development of savings opportunities and benchmarking of industry standards and practices to identify opportunities
    • Preparation of pre-tender and tender documents in conjunction with key stakeholders
    • Work closely with Key BU management and strategic suppliers to delivery leading edge technology to support BU goals
  • Energy and Sustainability Market Intelligence
    • Continually contact and update data on RECs, RE mechanisms, and grid mix percentages to ensure/keep a live view of the movement of the utilities that service all sites.
    • Continually analyze data to ensure that as the market shifts around energy and sustainability the strategy moves with it allowing for a lowest total cost of ownership approach to the RE mechanisms being utilized to support the strategy.
    • Frequently conduct extensive RFPs/RFQs around RE projects and RE mechanisms
    • Effective resolution of daily issues for assigned category/s
      • Effectively responding to and delivering on the day to day sourcing activities and tenders  (including required documentation and approvals) and upload to current databases
      • Timely follow up and follow through on all requests from stakeholders
      • Ongoing and effective utility and supplier relationship management that delivers a mutual advantage
      • Running reports regularly in SAP and Intelex
      • Entering prices in PDM/SAP and using the CRM system to support the business teams as appropriate
      • Effectively document and catalogue any details in shared database and sourcing systems as well as quality management systems
      • Responsible for all Management of Change (MOC) and/or Change Control Forms (CCFs) as part of the      strategy for strategic change in RE mechanisms.
    • Negotiate with diverse set of suppliers across multiple regions and finalize negotiations and agreements with signing officers at supplier companies
    • Negotiate contractual agreements with suppliers to ensure that service, quality, added value, total cost, security of supply, and the deployment of the suppliers capabilities in innovation, are secured
    • Support Engineering on the implementation of RE projects
      • Includes RFPs/RFQs
      • Includes cost management
      • Includes contract analysis
    • Regular attendance is an essential function of this position


Supervisory Responsibilities

Direct oversight of a Category team of 0 – 3 (with potential international span)


Qualification & Experience Requirements


  • University degree in economics, engineering, or other science based analytical degrees desired but not required (equivalent experience in lieu of education will be considered)
  • Minimum of 2-4 years of business experience in the energy sector; college education  can take the place of work experience for analytical skills
  • Working knowledge of and experience with manufacturing plants, energy procurement, and utility operations with a focus on renewable energy.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision while remaining productive at all times.

  • Fluent in written and spoken English required
  • Experience with and solid understanding of SAP and Intelex with the ability and desire to work within and progress such complex systems with SharePoint
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Strong math skills, and knowledge of the metric system and unit conversions, are required
  • Heavy Data analysis including MS Excel pivot tables and spreadsheets to do calculations on cost potency changes, percentages, etc.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours to include overtime and weekends at times when needed


Travel Requirements

Periodic domestic and international travel to visit internal stakeholders in other regions, tradeshows, suppliers, and other events as required (15%)
